Project 2 Proposal

My idea for the group project is to create a stop-motion video that is a visual tour of the CCAD campus!

The final video would look similar to this:

We would show a student standing in the same spot in a series of stills that makes them appear to float through the entire campus. I think it would be great to find a different student from each department to be the model for the series of shots that shows the areas of campus that their major sort of lives in the most.

This would be a great project for the large groups we will be working with because we can divide the group up into teams of people for each section of campus that needs to be captured. How to best divide out the campus would be a topic for the first week (preproduction). The director/art director would need to establish a general "master shot" that each section would need to begin and end their sequences with (for continuity), but otherwise, each group could get creative with their stop-motion sequences, and perhaps even make the movement/emphasis relate to the majors/environments shown. Splitting into smaller teams is a great way for everyone to contribute in creating one project.

If there are approximately 15-20 people in our group, here's a rough idea for division of roles:

-Director: will ultimately decide how much of each section of campus is shown and what to emphasize, and meet with teams as needed to regulate these things. Will send e-mails and schedule meetings as needed. Will oversee the final compilation/editing process. I'd like to direct this project, but if it gets chosen and someone else is passionate about directing it, I would consider taking another role.
-Art Director: will decide on the "master shot", and the visual standard for each section to be shot at for continuity. The artistic director will keep up with each group on all visual aspects throughout the project to make sure that the final project looks cohesive. Will oversee the final compilation/editing process.
-Head of Editorial: will compile weekly blog posts by gathering updates from each team, document parts of each team's process, and keep track of what each team member gets credit for.
-3 or 4 teams (divided from the remaining group members): will map out the "routes" for shooting each of their assigned campus locations, find student(s) to be in the photos, shoot the photos, and sequence their photos together into movie files that will be compiled with the sequences from the other teams. Each team can divide up roles and duties between themselves once their locations are assigned by the director.

Here is a broad/rough timeline of how this project would get done. If this project gets chosen to move forward, there would definitely be more detail and more specific deadlines added to this timeline, but those would be decided in our first meeting.

Week 1: divide out campus sections, assign to smaller teams, iron out projected schedule/deadlines.
Week 2: shooting routes/maps drawn out for all campus sections (teams), master composition shot/visual standards/style determined and distributed to teams (art director).
Week 3: half of shooting done and sequenced.
Week 4: remainder of shooting done and sequenced.
Week 5: All footage edited together and completed, all documentation completed.

Thanks for considering my proposal, and please let me know if you have any suggestions that would make this project better if it goes into production!

  1. I've always liked watching these kinds of "fixed-figure" animations. The only real question I have is what makes this one different. These types of stop motion animations are essentially all the same thing in different locations. The core concept is great, but maybe it could be switched up by having the model(s) doing things and interacting as they float through the campus. Just a thought.

    1. I absolutely agree! I would want each team to get as creative as possible with each section of campus, making the model's interactions specifically relate to the environment/department. It would be great to make it interesting/informative enough to be some sort of CCAD promo.

  2. I really like this idea! I came up with a stop motion video idea as well. I think it'd be cool if we showed the different majors/departments of our school. It would be interesting to see the difference between them all & there environments.
